Track & Field Hosts WSU Open Indoor II Meet

COUGAR INDOOR TRACK & FIELD HOME FOR OPEN II: The Washington State University indoor track and field teams are home this weekend to host the WSU Indoor Open II...the WSU Indoor Facility's Mondo track will feature racing at 60m, 200m, 400m, mile, 800m and 3000m with 60m hurdles as well as a co-ed 4x400m relay...jumping and throwing field events will be contested on the turf inside the's 35-pound and women's 20-pound weight throws take place Friday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m...remaining field events will begin Saturday, Feb. 23, at 8:30 a.m. with running events set to start at 10 a.m...complete results will be posted at, following the meet's completion.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 35th season with the Cougar track program; 14th year as a head coach, 13th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...former WSU All-American heptathlete Diana Pickler is a volunteer assistant coach this season along with Bob Frey and Luan Weekes.

WANT TO COMPETE? OR JUST WATCH: All competitors need to register online no later than noon, Feb. 20, at for a $10 entry fee...late entries will be charged an additional $10 for signing up the day of the meet...spectators may watch Friday's and Saturday's events free of parking is available in the small Green Lot to the south of Indoor Practice Facility or behind and below the IPF.

Women - High Jump - Ebba Jungmark * 1.87m / 6-1 1/2 (t3rd)

Men - 400m - Jeshua Anderson # 47.14 (25th)
High Jump - Trent Arrivey # 2.14m/ 7-0 1/4 (t19th)

JUNGMARK HAS MEMORABLE START: Swedish freshman high jumper Ebba Jungmark (pronounced eh-bah yoon-mark) opened her WSU career by winning the Husky Classic meet 2/16 with a Dempsey Indoor Facility record, an indoor PR and NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark of 6-1 1/2 (1.87m)...that height is also the second-best high jump in school history...Jungmark competed in the 2007 World Championships at Osaka, Japan, where she finished 11th in high jump after clearing 6-2 (1.88m)...her lifetime-best mark is 6-3 1/2 (1.92m) achieved June 10, 2007, at Kil, Sweden.

ANDERSON SETS ANOTHER SCHOOL FRESHMAN RECORD: Freshman Jeshua Anderson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) set the freshman school record in the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.09 seconds at the WSU Open (1/19) and then dropped that time down further with a win at the Vandal Indoor in a PR time of 8.01 without pressing at the the Husky Classic (2/16), Anderson reached NCAA Provisional Qualifying in the 400m dash with his fourth place finish in a PR time of 47.14 seconds...this time also broke the freshman school record, breaking Kris Durr's 1984 time of 47.64...Anderson set the national prep 300m hurdles record last spring (35.28).

AIR ARRIVEY ARRIVES: Sophomore high jumper Trent Arrivey (pronounced air-ah-vee) cleared a PR height of 7-0 1/4 (2.14m) to win the Cougar Indoor Meet Jan. 26...Arrivey, from Woodinville, Wash., became the 28th Cougar to high jump better than 7-feet...this height is an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark which is tied for 19th-best nationally as of 2/18/08.

SPRINT SPEED DEMONS: Justin Woods, a junior from Buena Vista, Calif., won the Vandal Indoor men's 60m dash in a time of 6.77 seconds and took the 200m dash with a time of 21.32, both are season-bests...the meet provided notable times from freshman Marlon Murray (60m, PR 6.95; 200m, PR 21.80), and sophomore Sadiki James (60m, PR 6.99)...freshman André Jennings ran a 60m time of 6.99 at the Husky Classic (2/16).

THROWING-UP PRS: Senior thrower McKenzie Garberg threw the 20-pound weight a PR distance of 54-3 1/4 (16.54m) at the Husky Classic Meet 2/16 which is the fifth-best throw in school history...earlier this season she tossed a lifetime-best throw of 53-9 1/4 (16.39m), at both the Cougar Indoor (1/25) and at the Husker Invite (2/1)...Garberg, from Benton City, Wash., is a 2007 All-American discus thrower...Garberg won the Vandal Indoor discus with an indoor lifetime-best toss of 166-8 (50.80m), won the weight throw, and took second in the shot put with a PR heave of 48-0 1/2 (14.64m)...also at the Vandal Indoor, junior Phil MacArthur (Selkirk, Wash.) took second place by only an inch in the men's weight throw with a PR toss of 58-2 (17.73m)...Chase Mancuso (junior, Mukilteo, Wash.) reached a weight throw PR at the Husky Classic meet with a toss of 56-8 (17.27m).

LAMB NOT GENTLE WITH DISC: Junior Matt Lamb (Emmett, Idaho) threw an indoor PR discus mark of 192-6 (58.67m) to win the event at the Vandal Indoor...Lamb is a two-time outdoor discus All-American.

MILERS MAKING MARKS: Sophomore Lisa Egami (Coquitlam, British Columbia) clocked in a PR mile time of 4:55.83 at the Husky Classic Meet (2/16), seventh-fastest time in school history...senior Isley Gonzalez (Sunnyside, Wash.) won the women's mile at the Vandal Indoor with a PR time of 4:57.78, ninth-fastest women's mile time in school history...Gonzalez was the Cougars' top placer at the 2007 Pac-10 Cross Country Championships in eighth place...on the men's side of the ledger, senior Chris Concha (Reno, Nev.) ran a season-best mile time of 4:13.67 and Evan Blanshan clocked in with a PR time of 4:15.97, both at the Husky Classic.

HOP, SKIP AND JUMPING PR: Junior Moreno Zapata (Tacoma, Wash.) missed an NCAA provisional qualifying mark by one inch when he soared to a triple jump PR of 50-5 1/4 (15.37m) at the Husky Classic (2/16)...previously, he won the triple jump at the Cougar Indoor with a leap of 49-3 1/2 (15.02m)...he is the lone Cougar men's team triple jumper.

WOMEN VAULTERS MOVING UP: Freshman Alexa Huestis (Chehalis, Wash.) tied for third in the women's pole vault at the Husky Classic (2/16) after clearing a PR of 12-2 1/2 (3.72m), the sixth-best mark in WSU women's history.

MISSOU AT WAZZU: Freshman Candace Missouri reached PRs in three events at the Cougar Indoor meet Jan. 26...Missouri, from Evergreen High in Vancouver, Wash., long jumped 18-10 (5.74m) and triple jumped 38-9 3/4 (11.83m), taking second in both events...she also ran a time of 7.89 seconds in the 60m the Husker Invite, she improved her triple jump PR to 39-0 1/4 (11.89m)...dropped her 60m time to 7.77 at the Vandal Indoor.

QUARTER MILERS NOT FAR BEHIND: Open 400m runners Barry Leavitt (junior, Benton City, Wash.) reached a PR time of 48.19 at the Husky Classic (2/16) after running a time of 48.75 at the Vandal Indoor...Reny Follett (redshirt sophomore, Lewiston, Idaho) followed with a season-best time of 48.73 in Seattle.

MULTIS-TASKING: Rickey Moody, a senior from Puyallup, Wash., won the men's heptathlon at the Cougar Indoor Meet with a PR 5,216 points, just below the 5300 points needed for NCAA provisional qualifying...Kyle Schauble, sophomore from Kennewick, Wash., reached a hept PR to 5,032 points...freshman Trevor Habberstad (Santa Clarita, Calif.) made his collegiate multi debut with 4,611 points...Moody, who advanced to the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the long jump, reached an indoor PR in the long jump at the Husky Classic by leaping 24-1 1/2 (7.35m).

BIG ROB REACHES PR, AGAIN: Robert Williams, junior from Riverside, Calif., finished seventh in the men's 60m hurdles final at the Husker Invite 2/2, with a time of 8.24 seconds but had run a lifetime-best time of 8.04 in the prelims...this came a week after the Cougar Indoor where he ran a PR time of 8.07...Williams opened the season with a time of 8.09 at the WSU Open.

RELAY RALLIES AT HUSKER INVITE: The WSU men's distance medley relay squad of Luke Lemenager (sophomore, Maple Valley, Wash.), Kyle Schauble (sophomore, Kennewick, Wash.), Bob Hewitt-Gaffney (sophomore, Gillette, Wyo.) and Chris Concha (senior, Reno, Nev.), won their race with a time of 10:06.89...this was the lone event win for the Cougs at the Nebraska meet.

M-I-A COUGARS: Junior middle distance runner and 2007 Pac-10 steeplechase champion Sara Trané is out of action indefinitely with a sore knee...Haley Paul, 2005 cross country All-American, is also out indefinitely with a sore hip...freshman distance runner David Hickerson is resting his foot for six weeks due to a stress reaction...distance runners Marisa Sandoval and Sam Ahlbeck both suffered knee injuries last week after falling on the icy streets while on training runs in Pullman.

NATIONAL POLLS: The Trackwire Top 25 Poll and the Trackwire Dandy Dozen rankings have ceased to exist as of Jan. 2, 2008, according to an announcement on the internet site...the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) began indoor team rankings January 30 with neither Cougar team ranked in the top 20 after three weeks of polls.

THE COUGARS' HOME INDOOR FACILITY: The WSU Indoor Facility has a Mondo track with an eight-lane 60m straightaway, throwers' cage, long/triple jump pit, pole vault and high jump inside a six-lane 200m oval.
