Cal Discards UAB, 10-2
Feb. 22, 2008
San Luis Obispo - Clutch hitting from Julie Meyer, Valerie Arioto and Sanoe Kekahuna lifted the California Golden Bears to a convincing 10-2 victory over Alabama-Birmingham in the first day of the Cal Poly Mustang Classic on Friday afternoon.
Cal (8-5) faces Cal Poly later tonight at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Kekahuna extended her hitting streak to nine games with her 3-for-4 performance at the dish. She also drove in two runs and scored a run. It was her fifth multi-hit game of the season as well. Arioto had a solid outing at the plate, connecting for two hits with a pair of RBI and runs scored. Erika Racklin, who leads the team in multi-hit games with seven, had two hits and two stolen bases. It was Racklin's 52nd career stolen base, good enough to pass Lindsay James for fifth all-time at Cal.
Arioto also earned the win in the circle (her third of the year) after allowing an earned run on three hits in five innings of work. She also fanned five UAB batters in the process.
After UAB scored a run to go up 1-0 in the top of the first, the Bears responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Arioto led the inning off with a walk, and advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Racklin. After Gina Leomiti walked, Bernice Masaniai knocked a single through the middle to plate Arioto. One batter later, Kekahuna singled to load the bases, which was followed by a Julie Meyer bases clearing single that allowed all three runners to score.
Cal tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second, thanks to Kekahuna's two-run single (Leomiti and Arioto scored) through the left side of the infield, giving the Bears a 6-1 lead. Arioto keyed a two-run fifth for Cal when her double to center field scored both Lauren Bauer and Taylor Kelly.
