Cougar Baseball Drops Season-Opener to Creighton

Feb. 22, 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. - Creighton scored four times off Washington State starting pitcher Chad Arnold and went on to post an 8-4 victory in the baseball season-opener for both schools at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday.

The Bluejays scored twice in each of the first two frames and chased Arnold before he recorded an out in the second inning. Steve Winkelmann's two-out, two-run double in the first staked Creighton to a 2-0 lead. In the second, Robbie Knight collected a RBI-single and Darin Ruf drew a bases loaded walk to increase the Bluejays' advantage to 4-0.

The run-support made a winner out of Creighton starter Ben Mancuso (1-0) who went five innings and gave up three runs, two earned. Ben Venditte, the nation's only ambidextrous pitcher, logged four innings of relief for his first save of the season.

Senior Paul Gran provided much of the Cougars' offense with a 3-for-3, three-RBI night. The Bothell, Wash., native delivered a sacrifice fly in the third and added a RBI-double in the fifth and a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Freshman James Wise made his collegiate debut on the mound for WSU and logged three innings while giving up an unearned run.

The teams continue their three-game series, Saturday at 2 p.m.
