Top Ranked Baseball Opens Season with 7-0 Shutout of Miami, Ohio

TEMPE, Ariz. - Four Sun Devil pitchers combined on a two hit shutout, while the ASU offense took advantage of four Miami, Ohio errors to give top-ranked Arizona State a 7-0 victory on Opening Night. Senior lefty Josh Satow went 5.2 innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three to pick up the victory. 2,199 saw the Devils win in the DeMarini Invitational at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
The Devils and their potent offense found themselves in a pitcher's duel early, trading zeroes with the RedHawks through the first three innings. ASU finally broke through in the fourth, taking advantage of a dropped fly ball hit by Ryan Sontag that allowed Kiel Roling to score from second and give the Devils a 1-0 lead.
Arizona State would strike again in the third, scoring three times to push the lead to 4-0. After Brett Wallace reached on an error, Petey Paramore gave the Devils their first hit with a double down the right field line. Wallace would come home on a sacrifice fly to center by Mike Jones. Marcel Champagnie then brought home his first RBI as a Sun Devil, scoring Paramore on a double to left center. Matt Newman then plated his first run at ASU, scoring Champagnie on a single down the line in left.
Arizona State would add two more in the seventh, including a solo blast by Jason Kipnis that made it 5-0. Paramore made it 6-0 on a double to left center that scored Wallace. Wallace would draw a bases loaded walk in the eighth to cap the scoring.
ASU finished with seven hits, beating Miami starter Chris Niro, who allowed four unearned runs in 5.2 innings of work.
In the first game of the day at the DeMarini Invitational, Vanderbilt beat Oregon State 8-1.
The Devils take on #3 Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the DeMarini Invitational in Tempe. The second game of the day is at 7 p.m. and features Miami vs. Oregon State.
