Sacramento State Stings Cal, 8-6
Feb. 23, 2008
Berkeley - California nearly pulled off a big comeback, but came up just short in an 8-6 loss to Sacramento State in the second day of the Mustang Classic hosted by Cal Poly on Saturday morning. The Bears (8-7) take on Santa Clara later this afternoon. Possible rains delays could move the start time of that contest, which is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Hornets unlocked a scoreless tie in the fifth inning by putting four runs on the board. Melissa Cross led off the inning with a solo home run, before Whitney Loomis delivered a three-run home run four batters later.
Sacramento State added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, courtesy of back-to-back RBIs.
Cal responded with a comeback in the bottom half of the sixth with three runs, trimming the deficit to 6-3. Erika Racklin, who reached base on an infield error by the Hornets, eventually scored on a Sanoe Kekahuna groundout to the short stop. One batter later, Katie Vickers punched a single to center field, allowing Gina Leomiti (who reached on a walk) to score. With the bases loaded, Taylor Kelly notched a single through the right side to plate Lauren Bauer. Cal could not muster anymore runs with the bases loaded and one out.
Sacramento State extended its lead to 8-3 with two more runs in the top of the seventh. The Bears tried to close the gap in the bottom of the seventh when Sanoe Kekahuna extended her hitting streak to 11 games with a two-run double that plated Racklin and Leomiti. Two batters later, Meyer drilled a single to center field to score Kekahuna. The rally and game ended however when Kelly lined out to the pitcher.
