Trojans Enjoy Success In Season Opener At The Rose Relays
Feb. 23, 2008
LOS ANGELES - The USC track and field team battled through the wind and rain to kick off the 2008 outdoor season today (Feb. 23) at the Claremont Rossi Relays held in Claremont, Calif. The Trojans were well represented as they won 12 different events on the day.
'I thought we had good efforts when you consider the weather conditions of strong headwinds, rain and cold,' said USC Director of Track and Field Ron Allice. 'Overall, I think we competed and we needed this. It was kind of like a scrimmage. We just needed to get in and compete against ourselves and against some other competition and next week (Trojan Relays) will be a progression for us. This gave an opportunity for some of our other athletes to represent the university and they stepped up and did a good job. We had a lot of people that I thought performed really well, but you can't tell by the times due to the conditions, but I was pleased.'
Trojans who won events today were Shalina Clarke (100m HH, 400m IH), the USC 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams, Kai Kelley (110m HH, 400m IH), the USC 4x400m Relay Team, the USC Distance Medley, Derek Scott (Pole Vault), Aven Wright (Triple Jump), Aaron Dan (Discus) and Trey Henderson (Hammer).
Clarke won the 100m HH with a time of 13.99 and the 400m IH with a hand-held time of 1:02.8, just ahead of teammate Katie Kirst who also had a 1:02.8 time.
The women's winning 4x100m relay team had a time of 44.99, with the USC 'B' team coming in fifth with a time of 50.22. USC won the women's 4x400m relay with a time of 3:45.37, with the USC 'B' squad taking third with a time of 3:54.54.
The Trojan men's hurdlers had a strong day, as Kai Kelley won the 110m HH with a meet-record time of 14.12, followed in order by three teammates, Logan Taylor (14.21), Oscar Spurlock (14.69) and Sean Adams (14.87). Kelley pulled off the daily-double with a winning hand-held time of 53.5 in the 400m IH. In that race, Sheldon Evans placed third with a time of 54.2 and Adams fourth with a time of 54.2.
USC's men's 4x400m relay teams battled to a 1-2 finish with times of 3:16.61 and 3:16.71. USC won the distance medley with a time of 10:18.91, more than six seconds faster than the rest of the field, which included two other Trojan teams.
Derek Scott bounced back from his year off with a win in the pole vault, clearing 16-0 3/4. Aaron Dan (166-9/50.84m) and Colin Campbell (147-11/45.08m) finished first and second respectively in the discus, while Trey Henderson won the hammer competition with a throw of 185-4 (56.48m)
Aven Wright won the men's triple jump with a distance of 47-9 1/4 (14.56m).
