STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 28 California men's tennis team (4-4) fell in a 5-2 decision to rival No. 31 Stanford (5-5) today at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. The Golden Bears were initially slated to meet the Cardinal on Saturday but the match was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. The loss drops the Bears to .500 on the season with four wins and four losses heading into a short break from dual play.

Stanford sophomore No. 62 Richard Wire put the match out of reach when he defeated senior Pierre Mouillon on court three with a convincing 6-2 second set score. Wire struggled against Mouillon in the first, needing a tiebreaker to win the opening stanza. Cal got the 9-7 nod on court three in doubles play when freshman Bozhidar Katsarov teamed up with sophomore Kallim Stewart to defeat Wire and Gregory Hirshman but that was after the Cardinal had won consecutive doubles matches on courts one and two to earn the doubles point.

Stanford extended its lead with quick wins on courts one and two in singles play. On the top court, freshman No. 2 Alex Clayton didn't drop a game in the second set to defeat Stewart 6-4, 6-0. One court over, junior Eoin Heavey pushed the first set to a tiebreaker but dropped a 7-6, 6-2 decision to freshman No. 72 Matt Bruch. Katsarov stopped the Cardinal rush with a win on court five to give the Bears their first point of the match, besting Phil Kao by a 6-4, 6-2 score. Wire's win on court three came next.

With the match decided, freshman Pedro Zerbini got his fifth win in dual match singles play, beating Stanford junior Blake Muller 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the day's only three-setter. Senior Ken Nakahara had the last singles match to finish, falling on court six to Hirshman 6-3, 7-5.

The Bears won't play their next dual match until Friday, Mar. 7 when they face Arizona State on the road in Tempe, Ariz. Next up, the team will split into doubles units to take on the top collegiate men's tennis doubles teams on the west coast in the 2008 Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships in La Jolla, Calif. The three day event begins on Friday, Feb. 29 and runs through Sunday, Mar. 2. For tournament information, please visit the USTA website.
