San Diego State Beats USC, 2-1

Feb. 26, 2008

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Aztecs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 2-1 victory over the USC Trojans in a nonconference game at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs had just three hits in the game, scoring both runs off reliever Philip Urso on a balk with the bases loaded and a wild pitch.

San Diego State improved to 4-1 on the season while USC suffered its first loss, falling to 3-1.

Sophomore righty Kevin Couture (Coronado/Coronado HS) was outstanding in his first collegiate start, throwing six scoreless innings and allowing only two hits with three walks and six strikeouts. His counterpart, Shane Kaufman, threw six innings as well for the Aztecs with one run on six hits.

Hector Rabago led off the Trojan fifth with a double off the fence in left. After Anthony Vasquez sacrificed him to third, senior Roberto Lopez (La Mesa/Rancho Bernardo HS) singled Rabago home for the first run of the game. Joe De Pinto singled Lopez to third, but after De Pinto was thrown out on a stolen base attempt at second, Mike O'Neill flied out to left for the final out.

SDSU's Cory Vaughn led off the bottom of the fifth with his second double of the game, but Couture retired the next three batters to keep it a 1-0 USC lead.

Urso replaced Couture in the seventh and hit Garett Green with a pitch. After Brandon Glover singled Green to third, Vaughn hit a ground ball to Lopez at third as the Trojans retired Green in the 5-2-5 rundown for the first out. Cameron Johnson reached on a fielder's choice as Lopez retired Vaughn at second with two outs, but Urso plunked Pat Colwell on the first pitch to load the bases. With Brett Tanos coming to the plate, Urso was called for a balk before he delivered a pitch to tie the game at 1-1. On a full count to Tanos, Johnson scored the eventual game-winner when Urso threw the wild pitch.

Addison Reed earned his first save with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Aztecs.

Notes: Hector Rabago and Nick Buss kept their season-opening hitting streaks alive at four games...sophomore catcher Robert Stock threw out both baserunning attempts against him tonight and has thrown out three of four baserunners this season.
