Wilcox Homers Twice In 8-6 UW Loss

Feb. 27, 2008

SEATTLE - Lewis-Clark State lost two leads in the game, but held on after going in front for a third time to beat Washington, 8-6, Wednesday in the Huskies' home opener at Husky Ballpark.

The Warriors, the two-time defending NAIA champs, improved to 11-2 with the win while the Huskies fell to 2-3. Husky catcher Brett Wilcox, a junior from Bothell High, hit two homers for the UW, the first two of his career. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Reliever Michael Guerrero (2-0) picked up the win with two and one-third innings of scoreless relief. Husky reliever Tyler Cheney (0-2) gave up four runs, all on homers, over one and one-third innings in the loss.

The Warriors, who had led 1-0 and 4-1, only to see the Huskies tie the score on both occasions, took the lead for good in the seventh. With two down and none on, Sean Halton singled and catcher Brian Ward homered to left, putting the Warriors on top for the third time at 6-4.

LC's Paul Martin and Kyle Greene hit back-to-back solo homers in the eighth to add two more needed runs.

The Huskies looked to get back into the game in the bottom of the eighth. With Michael Burgher aboard at first, Wilcox hit his second home run, cutting the Warriors lead to 8-6.

In the ninth, the Huskies got two aboard with back-to-back, one-out walks, but LC reliever Blaine Hardy came on and got the final two outs to pick up the save.

Lewis-Clark State picked up a run in the first. With the bases loaded thanks to a single, a walk and a hit batter, Josh Ashenbrenner drew a two-out walk to force in Martin.

The Huskies notched a run in the second to tie the game at 1-1 as Kyle Conley led off with a walk, stole second and eventually scored on a single from freshman Troy Scott.

The Warriors broke the game open in the fifth. After two walks and an out, third baseman Ikaika Lester doubled to drive in a run. After a strikeout, Ashenbrenner, a former Washington State Cougar, came through with a two-run double, giving the Warriors a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wilcox cut the lead to 4-2 with a one-out solo homer, his first as a Husky. After the homer, the Huskies loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. Sophomore third baseman Jarett Jackson then followed with a two-out double to the gap in right-center, sending home two runners to tie the game at 4-4.

The Huskies return to the road this weekend to face Pacific in a three-game series in Stockton, Calif. Fans can listen to live audio and watch live stats at no charge for all three games at gohuskies.com.
