Cal Closes Tournament with 7-2 Win over Western Kentucky

Las Vegas - The California softball team left Las Vegas in good spirits after its 7-2 win over Western Kentucky in the final day of the Eller Media Stadium Classic, hosted by UNLV on Sunday afternoon. Cal finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, including wins over Long Beach State, Pittsburgh, Hawaii and WKU.
The Bears (14-8) have won six of their last seven games and return home for an afternoon game against North Dakota State on Thursday, Mar. 6 at 2 p.m.
Freshman Valerie Arioto and Senior Erika Racklin produced as the 1-2 hitters in the line up, combining for six hits (three each), three runs and two RBI. Racklin also stole two more bases, brining her season total to 11. For her career, Racklin has 55 stolen bases, tied for fourth-most in program history. Arioto hit her third triple of the year and is now three away from entering the Cal record books for most triples in a season.
Sophomore Brittany LaRosa earned the win in the circle with her best outing of the year, allowing two runs (both unearned) on three hits over six innings of work.
Cal unlocked a 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth inning with four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Sanoe Kekahuna led off the inning with a walk and quickly moved to second base after Katie Vickers placed down a sacrifice bunt. After Julie Meyer's single to center field moved Kekahuna to third base, Taylor Kelly followed with an infield single allowing Kekahuna to score. Shannon Houston followed suite and knocked a single up the middle to plate Meyer. Arioto got in the action and singled through the right side to plate Kelly.
The Bears padded their lead with two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-1 lead. Arioto tripled to being the inning and scored one play later after Racklin slapped a single through the left side. Gina Leomiti knocked a single to center field one batter later to score Racklin.
