No. 22/24 UW Heads to Hawaii

SEATTLE - The No. 22/24 (NFCA/USA Softball) Washington softball team (10-6-1) heads to Honolulu, Hawaii this week for a four-day tournament hosted by the University of Hawaii.

The Huskies open up the Malinhi Kipa Aloha Tournament on Thursday, March 6 at 2 p.m. PT against the Netherlands National Team in an exhibition. On Friday, the UW plays Eastern Kentucky at noon PT and Idaho State at 2 p.m. PT. On Saturday, the Huskies take on Southern Illiniois at noon before facing No. 15/14 Hawaii at 4 p.m. PT. Sunday will feature bracket play.

Last week, Washington opened up its home schedule by going 3-1 at the Husky Softball Classic, including a 6-3 win on Saturday, March 1 over then-No. 1 Alabama. The Huskies also defeated Nevada, 2-0, and Portland State, 10-2 in five-innings before losing to PSU, 4-2, in eight innings.

Marnie Koziol earned tournament MVP honors after leading the Husky Softball Classic in batting average (.462) and stolen bases (5), and tying for the lead in runs (5). Jace Williams and Aleah Macon joined Koziol on the all-tournament team. Williams hit .364 with two runs scored and four RBI, and Macon went 2-1 with a 0.67 ERA and a tournament-best 29 Ks in 21 innings pitched.

This will be the first time that the Huskies have played Eastern Kentucky 8-4), Southern Illinois (10-7) and Idaho State (1-8), while it will mark the eighth matchup between the UW and Hawaii. Washington holds a 5-2 lead in the series, but the Rainbow Wahine won the last contest, 7-6, back on Feb. 6, 2005. Hawaii enters the tournament with a 13-4 record and is ranked No. 15 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, and No. 14 in the Softball Poll.

This will Washington's third game this season against a ranked opponent. The Huskies are 1-1 after defeating Alabama last week. They lost earlier this season to then-No. 3 Texas A&M, 10-4.

Washington is hitting .311 on the season with 19 doubles and 11 home runs. Five UW players are hitting over .300 and two are over .400, led by freshman 3B Jace Williams with a .474 average., which leads the Pac-10.

Sophomore IF/OF Bailey Stenson is batting .397, junior OF Marnie Koziol is hitting .352, sophomore UTL Amanda Fleischman is hitting .310 and junior C Alicia Blake is batting .320. Senior P Caitlin Noble is just below the .300 mark at .296, as is senior 1B/OF Lauren Greer with a .294 average.
