No. 6 Men's Tennis Overpowers No. 13 Rice, 7-0

LOS ANGELES - On the eve of one of its biggest matches of the season, the sixth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team stayed focused on the task at hand Wednesday, shutting out No. 13 Rice, 7-0 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who host No. 10 USC tomorrow, improve to 9-1 on the season. The Owls fall to 8-3 overall with the loss.
'I'm really proud of my guys,' said UCLA head coach Billy Martin. 'The doubles gave us a lot of momentum and I think that carried over into singles. I told our guys before the match not to look ahead to tomorrow because Rice is too good a team. I'm really proud of this performance.'
UCLA set the tone for the afternoon with an strong performance in doubles, taking all three matches to claim the point. After Mathieu Dehaine and Holden Seguso won their match at court No. 2, the Bruins clinched the point at the No. 3 spot, where Jeremy Drean and Michael Look took a 9-7 victory over Dennis Polyakov/Bruno Rosa. Even more impressive was the Bruins' performance at the No. 1 spot, as Nick Meister and Harel Srugo battled back from 6-3 down to eventually upset No. 16 Ralph Knupfer/Christoph Muller, 9-8(5).
UCLA quickly moved out to a 3-0 lead in the match after Dehaine (court No. 2) and Meister (court No. 6) cruised to a pair of straight-set wins. Srugo then clinched the match for UCLA at court No. 1, downing Rosa, 6-3, 6-4.
Two other straight-set winners for the Bruins on Wednesday were Look, who notched a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Filip Zivojinovich at court No. 4, and Seguso, who defeated Knupfer, 6-2, 7-6(2) at court No. 3.
Senior Jeremy Drean was extended to a tiebreaker in place of a third set at court No. 5 before eventually prevailing 6-3, 6-7(7), (10-1) over Chong Wang.
UCLA and USC hit the Los Angeles Tennis Center courts tomorrow beginning at 1:30 p.m.
