March 6, 2008

LONG BEACH, CALIF. - California continued its assault on the 2008 Pac-10 Swimming Championships Thursday night at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach as senior William Copeland captured the 2008 Pac-10 title in the 50 free, while the Golden Bears' 200 free relay team of Copeland, Jernej Godec, Joe Whittington and freshman Graeme Moore also won a league title with an NCAA automatic time of 1:17.99.

In the 50 free final won by Copeland, fellow Cal seniors Whittington and Godec were part of a three-way tie for third place. Copeland's time of 19.47 was the event's fastest, followed by Stanford's Jason Dunford's time of 19.54 and then Stanford's Austin Staab, Whittington and Godec all tied with NCAA automatic qualifying times of 19.59.

In the 500 free final, Bear senior Dominik Meichtry placed fourth with an NCAA consideration time of 4:20.45. In the 200 IM final, Cal freshman Martti Aljand came in third with a time of 1:46.11 after swimming an NCAA automatic time of 1:45.44 in the morning prelims.

After seven events, including one-meter diving that was completed last week, the Bears trail No. 3-ranked Stanford, 277 to 258, but are ahead of No. 2-ranked Arizona (240), Arizona State (157), USC (134) and Washington (77).

'We seemed a little bit tentative in our relay, but we are swimming well,' said Cal coach David Durden. 'We are enjoying the results. We still have a long way to go. I feel the best two days of this meet are still in front of us.'

On Friday, morning prelims will begin at 11 a.m. and include the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back. Finals will begin at 6 p.m. Friday evening.
