No. 18 Cal Baseball Defeats Northern Iowa, 11-3, in the Metrodome

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The No. 18-ranked California baseball team improved its record to 7-1-1 with an 11-3 victory over Northern Iowa Friday at the University of Minnesota Tournament held at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. The Golden Bears were led by the hitting of sophomore catcher Dylan Tonneson, who had a clutch three-run double in the third inning, while sophomore left-hander Chris Petrini earned his second win of the season, pitching a career-high 7.0 innings with three hits, three runs, four walks and six strikeouts.
In the top of the third inning, Northern Iowa pitcher Nick Kirk (1-2, 4.0 innings, four hits, five earned runs, four walks, nine strikeouts) hit Cal's sophomore center fielder Brett Jackson with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run before yielding the three-double down the first base line to Tonneson to snap a 0-0 tie.
The Bears then added three more runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Rich Gorman, an RBI double by junior first baseman David Cooper and an RBI single by senior second baseman Josh Satin.
With the score 7-2 entering to top of the sixth inning, Cal added an additional four runs when Cooper had his second double of the day with one out and scored on Tonneson's RBI single up the middle. Sophomore right fielder Blake Smith then followed with his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to make the score, 11-2. The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Chris Lopez home run to make the final margin, 11-3.
Tonneson finished the day 2-for-3 with a career-high four RBI, and Cooper was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Sophomore left-hander Michael Bugary replaced Petrini in the eighth inning and threw 2.0 innings with one hit, no runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
The Bears next take on host Minnesota at 6:30 p.m. CST on Saturday, Mar. 8, followed by New Mexico on Sunday, Mar. 9, at 11 a.m. CDT.
