March 7, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Junior left-hander Tim Murphy (2-0) recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings, limiting St. Mary's to one base-hit as the No. 3 UCLA baseball team rolled to a 14-0 victory Friday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Murphy, who fanned 10 batters in a complete game victory last Saturday, has pitched 19.1 consecutive scoreless innings. The left-hander from Vista, Calif., allowed just one runner to reach second base.
St. Mary's right-hander Brandon Berl (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) and seven hits in five innings. Berl registered five strikeouts and four walks for the Gaels (7-2).
Sophomore right fielder Gabe Cohen delivered for the Bruins (6-3), finishing 2-for-4 with a career-high six RBI and one run. Cohen recorded a two-RBI double in the fifth inning and a bases-clearing triple in the sixth. Senior second baseman Alden Carrithers continued his hot hitting, posting a 4-for-5 effort with three runs. The Portland, Ore., resident totaled one double and three singles in five at-bats, equaling his career high with four hits.
First baseman Casey Haerther hit 2-for-6 with two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. Center fielder Justin Uribe turned in the Bruins' fourth multi-hit effort of the night, finishing 2-for-2 with three runs, one walk and two hit-by-pitches.
UCLA scored three runs in the first inning, four in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the eighth to assume a 14-0 lead. The Bruins got on the board early, as Haerther drove a two-RBI base-hit up the middle in the bottom of the first inning before Uribe plated the Bruins' first baseman on a fielder's choice.
In the fifth inning, the Bruins added one run as Haerther stole second base, allowing Carrithers to score from third. Both runners had reached via base-hits to open the inning. Designated hitter Cody Decker drew a walk, and a bunt single to third base by Uribe loaded the bases. Cohen drove home Haerther and Decker with a double to right field, handing UCLA a 6-0 lead. Uribe scored on an ensuing pass ball.
UCLA struck for three more runs in the sixth inning. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis led off the frame with a walk and took third base on a single through the right side by Carrithers. Decker drew his second walk of the evening before Cohen launched a triple into right field, scoring all three baserunners.
Shortstop Brandon Crawford delivered a two-RBI double to right in the eighth inning, handing the Bruins a 12-0 cushion. Pinch-hitter Raul Duran reached first base on an error, allowing Crawford to score. Duran later advanced home on a base hit to left field by Niko Gallego.
