BERKELEY - The No. 8 California women's tennis team (9-3, 2-0 Pac-10) defeated No. 13 Arizona State (8-2, 0-0) by a 5-2 score today at the Hellman Tennis Complex, handing the Sun Devils their second loss of the season. The Golden Bears played with a slightly realigned lineup but the results proved to be favorable as they took wins on all four top singles courts. Senior No. 32 Cristina Visico clinched the third straight match for Cal, defeating Laila Abdala on court three by a 6-3, 6-3 score.

The Bears' top two doubles courts split wins with the Sun Devils as the No. 42-ranked senior duo of Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano blew away No. 36-ranked Nadia and Laila Abdala on court one by an 8-1 score. After losing the match on court two, the doubles point was left up to seniors Cristina Visico and Daron Moore. Visico and Moore held a 7-4 lead in the match before the Sun Devils' Ashlee Brown and Kelcy McKenna came back to tie things up at seven games apiece and then eight games all. The Bears opened up the tiebreaker with a vengeance, winning the first four points and eventually clinching the doubles point with a 7-4 win as they forced McKenna into an error to end the match.

In singles play, No. 15 Babos had little trouble with No. 74 McKenna, getting the 6-1, 6-2 win on court two to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the match. No. 106 Kusano finished second, earning the 6-0, 6-4 victory against Brown on court four. Fighting a 3-0 deficit, the Devils came back to get the point on court five as Jessica Leitch defeated freshman Rachael Dillon 6-2, 6-2 in Dillon's first dual singles match. Needing just one more team point, No. 32 Visico pulled away for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laila Abdala on court three, clinching the match for the Bears.

Following Visico, freshman Marina Cossou got a hard-fought win over No. 30 Nadia Abdala on court one, dropping only three games in the first set and only two in the second. With the win, Cossou has won three straight singles matches including the last two against top-30 opponents. With the match decided, Moore went to a third-set tiebreaker on court six but could not hold on against ASU senior Wendy Pilecka, falling 10-6 in the breaker.

The Bears will play host to No. 63 Arizona (7-7) tomorrow in a noon match at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Wildcats are coming off a 7-0 loss at Stanford. Please check for updates and live video links.
