Cougar Baseball Routs Kent State

PULLMAN, Wash. - Paul Gran collected four hits and Jim Murphy homered for the fifth-straight game, as Washington State routed Kent State 21-4 in nonconference baseball, Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Gran was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI to raise his team-leading total to 18. In all, 13 different Cougars had a hit, including eight with multi-hit performances, and 11 WSU (8-2) hitters registered a RBI.

After Kent State (3-7) scored twice in the top of the first inning, Murphy blasted his fifth home run of the season with a man aboard in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2.

WSU took the lead for good with a three-run second inning. Shea Vucinich drove in the go-ahead with a RBI-ground out, Travis Coulter delivered a RBI-triple and John Desmarais capped the rally with a run-scoring single to put the Cougars up 5-2.

'Murphy got us on the board early and we didn't stop off after that,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'We are swinging the bats really well right now.'

The Cougars added three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the seventh and eight in the eighth. Michael Ratigan (3-0) picked up the win with three innings of relief, yielding a lone unearned run.

WSU's fourth inning was highlighted by Gran's two-run double. In the fifth, Coulter had a RBI-double and Gran plated him with a single.

Garry Kuykendall's two-run singled highlighted the Cougar seventh and Ryan Peterson's two-run double was the big hit in the eighth.

The Cougars and Golden Flashes wrap up their four-game series Sunday at noon.
