The No. 38 California men's tennis team (5-5) bounced back from a tough loss and handed one out of their own, defeating No. 36 Arizona (10-4) in a 4-3 thriller that came down to the final singles match today at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. With the match knotted up at three points each, sophomore No. 96 Kallim Stewart clinched the victory for the Golden Bears when he pulled out a 7-5 third-set winner over Jay Goldman on court two. Stewart opened up the match needing a tiebreaker to win the first set before falling in the second and coming back to claim the win in the third.

In doubles play, the Bears won on all three courts for only the second time this season and clinched the doubles point for only the third time in 10 tries. The team of junior Geoff Chizever and freshman Pedro Zerbini got an 8-6 win over the No. 48-ranked duo of Claudio Christen and Goldman on court one but it was junior Eoin Heavey and Stewart who clinched the point for Cal with the 8-4 win on court two against Bruno Alcala and Ravid Hazi.

In singles, the Wildcats tied the match up with a win on court one as Heavey fell to No. 108 Christen by a 6-4, 6-2 score. The appearance on the top court was a first for Heavey's career. Arizona went head 2-1 next with a 6-1, 6-4 Andres Carrasco win over senior Pierre Mouillon on court three. The Bears tied the match back up when freshman Jonathan Dahan got the 6-2, 6-3 nod over Peter Zimmer on court five. Cal jumped back out to a 3-2 lead as freshman Bozhidar Katsarov notched the 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) win over Pat Metham on court six, holding Metham to two points in the tiebreaker.

Arizona would not be turned away though. The Cats came back to tie things up on the next court over when Alcala pushed for the 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Zerbini to knot things up at three points per team. Stewart's win on court two came next, and last to seal the thrilling 4-3 victory for the Bears.

The Bears return home this week to host Penn Tuesday (March 11) in a 1:30 p.m. midweek match. Then Cal will meet Southern Methodist and USF at a neutral site in Pebble Beach, Calif. March 15 and 16 respectively. Please check for updates and scores.
