No. 8 Golden Bears Complete 6-1 Rout Of Arizona
March 8, 2008
The No. 8 California women's tennis team (10-3, 2-0 Pac-10) routed No. 63 Arizona 6-1 today at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears dropped only two sets to the Wildcats (7-8, 0-0 Pac-10) on their way to the team's 10th win of the season. Freshman No. 47 Marina Cossou clinched the win for Cal when she hit a shot to the deep right-hand corner of her opponent's court, finishing off No. 62 Danielle Steinberg by a 6-4, 6-1 score. Cossou led both sets by a 4-0 score but surrendered four games in the first. In the second, after Steinberg took game six, Cossou dismissed any chances of a Wildcat comeback, putting the match away for the Bears.
Cal got a jump on the competition, sweeping the doubles matches with court two finishing well ahead of the others. Cossou teamed up with fellow freshman Rachael Dillon to get the 8-1 win over Katie Orletsky and Natalia Toporowska. Senior's Daron Moore and Cristina Visico locked up the doubles point on court three when Moore put a slam down to earn the 8-3 win over Jane Huh and Ariane Masschelein. On court one, the No. 42-ranked duo of seniors Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano took an 8-3 win over the Arizona junior duo of Claire Rietsch and Steinberg.
In singles play, No. 15 Babos wasted no time going to work on Rietsch on court two, walking away with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the match. No. 106-ranked Kusano finished next on court four, taking a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Jane Huh. Kusano had an easy time in the first, breaking all of Huh's serve's but the two held serve for most of the second until Kusano earned a break in the ninth game to get the go-ahead to win in the 10th. Cossou's win on the top court came next to give Cal the team victory.
Court six completed play next with senior Daron Moore getting her first career dual match singles victory. After coming away with a 6-2 win in the first set, Moore had a hard time shaking Orletsky in the second with each player holding serve the whole way. Moore got the most important break of the match however, when she flipped the serve on Orletsky in the 12th game to get the 7-5 nod in set two. Moore's win put the Bears ahead 5-0 and with the match decided, the remaining two courts went to third set tiebreakers.
No. 32 Visico coasted to an easy 6-1 first set win but found herself down 5-1 in the second before she could mount a short rally. Visico's efforts fell short, sending her match to a third set. In the tiebreaker, Visico managed only six points in defeat to Toporowska. Dillon had the final match to finish on court five, as she too won her first set before giving up the second. Dillon however, managed to hold Masschelein to six points in the tiebreaker to get her first dual match singles victory today, giving Cal its sixth point of the day and a 6-1 win over the Cats.
The Bears have a bye week coming up before hosting BYU Friday, March 21 in a 1:30 p.m. match at Hellman Tennis Complex. Please check CalBears.com for updates and scores.
