Stanford Begins Outdoor Season

    Stanford had a busy day on the track as they got their outdoor season underway at UC Davis as well as sending three athletes to the UW Last Chance Meet indoors at the University of Washington. In Davis, Stanford competed in a quadrangular meet with the Aggies, Fresno State, and San Francisco. Meanwhile, three Stanford athletes looked to improve their marks to help their chances of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

    In Davis, Stanford was most impressive in the field events where they achieved several regional qualifying marks. On the men's side Stanford got a regional standard from Mike Macellari in the shot put with a toss of 55-11 ¾ to finish first. Macellari also took second in the discus with a throw of 159-0.

    Casey Roche also achieved a regional qualifying mark in the in the pole vault by winning the competition with a mark of 16-7 ¾.

    The other event winner of the men's side was Michael Garcia in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.38.

    For the women, Danielle Maier won the javelin with a throw of 151-6, a regional qualifying mark.

    Also with event wins for the Cardinal women were Lindsay Allen in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:37.22, Caitlin Hewitt in the pole vault with a mark of 11-11 ¾, Michaela Wallerstedt in the discus with a toss of 150-1, and Melissa Yunghans in the shot put with a throw of 44-10.75

    At the last chance meet, Andrew Dargie was successful in improving his provisional time to 46.95 seconds in the 400 meters. For the women Sabrina Nettey and Brittni Dixon-Smith competed in the long jump, but did not improve their provisional standards.

    Stanford will not compete again outdoors until March 29 when they travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif. to compete at Cal Poly. Next weekend, Stanford's attention will return indoors when they compete at the Indoor NCAA Championships. Both the men's and the women's teams are ranked No.6 in the country entering the meet.
