Stanford Downs Campbell, 5-0
March 8, 2008
Stanford, Calif. - The No. 7/9 Stanford softball team continued its run through the Stanford Classic today, shutting out Campbell in its fourth game of the tournament, 5-0. Spurred by Maddy Coon's third homerun of the year, the Cardinal improved to 25-2.
The Cardinal outhit the Camels, 4-3. Coon's homerun and two RBI led the Cardinal offensively, while freshman pitcher Ashley Chinn recorded her first career shutout to carry the Stanford defense. Chinn, who gave up just three hits, has now allowed three or less hits in her last three appearances.
Coon ripped her homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning, putting Stanford on the board. Tricia Aggabao drew a four-pitch walk to put a runner on, and the junior shortstop belted her 16th career homerun over the right field fence to give Stanford a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, a series of Camel miscues and three walks helped the Cardinal pull further ahead. Alissa Haber walked to lead off the inning, and Stanford attempted to play small ball to bring her around. Aggabao beat out a well-placed bunt, and drew a costly errant throw from the Campbell third baseman. Both runners advanced one base on the error, and Haber took advantage of an unguarded home plate and scored the third Cardinal run. With Aggabao at second, Coon was intentionally walked to put a second runner on. After the Camels recorded two straight outs, Shannon Koplitz earned a walk to load the bases. Freshman Melisa Koutz chopped an infield single up the middle to score one run, and another one scored on an error by the Campbell second baseman.
Stanford will take on Texas Tech in its second game of the doubleheader today starting at approximately 5:30 p.m. The Cardinal closes out play at the Stanford Classic tomorrow, meeting the College of Charleston Cougars at 11 a.m.
