No. 3 UCLA Baseball Edged by St. Mary's, 4-2, in Series Finale

LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA baseball team lost to St. Mary's, 4-2, in the finale of a three-game set Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. After having won the first two games of the series by scores of 14-0 and 7-6, the Bruins managed just two runs and seven hits in game three.

St. Mary's right-hander Scott Schneider (3-0) earned the victory, allowing two runs (one earned) and six hits in 6.0 innings. UCLA left-hander Matt Drummond (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs and seven hits in 4.0 innings.

Bruin left-handed relievers Matt Grace and Brendan Lafferty limited St. Mary's to three hits, including one solo home run. Lafferty hurled 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits while totaling three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Gaels were led by right fielder and leadoff hitter Kenny Fuglerud, who finished 2-for-3 with one run.

St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kenny Fuglerud led off the ballgame with a double to center field, moved to third base on a fly out and scored on a groundout to first base.

The Bruins tied the contest, 1-1, in the second inning when shortstop Brandon Crawford's fielder's choice plated center fielder Justin Uribe. Scoring from third base, Uribe had reached base safely that inning on a throwing error.

The Gaels assumed a 3-1 lead with one run in the top of the third and another in the fourth. Center fielder Cory Miller led off the third inning with a bunt single and moved to third base on a base-hit to right by Fuglerud. Second baseman Randy Wells lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Miller. In the fourth inning, designated hitter Geoff Byrns belted a two-out solo home run to right field.

St. Mary's added another run in the sixth inning on a solo home run to left-center field by left fielder Kyle Jensen.

The Bruins cut their deficit to 4-2 with one run in the bottom of the sixth. First baseman Casey Haerther reached with a fielder's choice and stole second base. Haerther scored on a bloop single to left by designated hitter Cody Decker.

UCLA returns to action against Pepperdine on Tuesday, March 11. Game time at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium is slated for 6 p.m.

Game Notes: UCLA's next three-game home set takes place April 4-6 against crosstown rival USC...left-hander Matt Grace entered the top of the fifth with runners at first and second, allowing a sacrifice bunt and a walk before prompting shortstop Joel Staples to ground into an inning-ending double play (6-4-3)...shortstop Brandon Crawford led the Bruins with two hits in three at-bats...the Bruins face Pepperdine for the first time since the 2007 NCAA Regionals at Long Beach State, where UCLA defeated the Waves, 7-3 (June 1).
