March 10, 2008
Quick Preview: Cal-Sacramento State
The California Golden Bears will host the Sacramento State Hornets on Tuesday at Levine-Fricke Field at 2 p.m., before competing at the Capital Classic (hosted by Sacramento State) March 14-16.
Cal is 19-9 on the season and has won 11 of its last 13 games dating back to February 23. During that span, the Bears have limited its opposition to a .179 batting average, thanks in part to the pitching staff. Valerie Arioto has posted a 3-0 record and a 1.68 ERA in the circle during that time with 29 strikeouts. Marissa Drewrey and Brittany LaRosa have combined for an 8-1 record as well with 48 Ks.
Cal has also received big contributions from Bernice Masaniai and Gina Leomiti. Since Feb. 23, Masaniai has hit .341 with eight runs, five doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI, while Leomiti has produced a .341 batting average with 12 runs, two home runs and 14 RBI.
Sacramento State meanwhile enters Tuesday's contest on a three game losing streak and an overall record of 10-9. Those three losses, however, have all come to ranked opponents (Fresno State, DePaul and Houston). The Hornets defeated Cal, 8-6 at the Mustang Classic, before losing to the Bears, 9-1 the following day at the tournament.
Sherry Clark paces the offense with a .400 batting average to go along with six doubles and nine RBI. Kayla Meeks has the most wins on the pitching staff (5) with a 2.61 ERA.
Cal leads the all-time series with Sacramento State, 43-10.
