Trojans Help Lead The U.S. To Victory At The World Indoor Championships

Former USC runners Angela Williams won the 60m dash and Candice Davis placed second in the 60m high hurdles at the World Indoor Championships held in Valencia, Spain from March 7-9 to help lead the U.S. team to a first-place finish in the medal standings, 13-12 over Russia.

Williams, who has battled injuries over the last few seasons, sprinted by Taheisa Harrigan of the Virgin Islands (7.09) and Jeanette Kwakye of Great Britain (7.08) at the tape to secure her world indoor title with a time of 7.06.

The former Trojan star has returned to health and has sprinted to the head of the pack this season, also winning the 60m dash at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Boston, Mass. on Feb. 24 with a time of 7.11. Williams is the USC 100m record-holder with a time of 11.04 and a four-time NCAA outdoor champion in the 100m dash. She also won the NCAA indoor 60m dash title in 2002 with a time of 7.09 and was part of USC's winning 4x100 relay team at the 2000 NCAA Championships.

Davis placed second to teammate LoLo Jones with a time of 7.93 to take the silver medal, marking team USA's first 1-2 finish in the history of the event. Davis also placed second to Jones at the U.S.A. Indoor Championships held in February in Boston, Mass. Davis, who graduated from USC last spring, is second all-time on USC's 100m HH list with a time of 12.90 and placed second at the 2007 NCAA Championships in the event.

Also representing USC while competing for the U.S. at the World Indoor Championships was high jumper Jesse Williams. Williams cleared 7-5 1/4 (2.27m) to finish tied for sixth place in the high jump. He took second place in the men's high jump at the U.S.A. Indoor Championships with a clearance of 7-5 3/4. Williams is the USC record-holder in the high jump at 7-7 1/4 and won the NCAA indoor and outdoor high jump championships in 2005 and 2006.
