Zalameda Falls in Pacific Life Open Qualifying
March 11, 2008
Indian Wells, Calif. - UCLA women's tennis player Riza Zalameda came up just short in her bid to qualify for the 2008 Pacific Life Open on Tuesday, as the Bruin senior fell in three sets to Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva in the final round of qualifying at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Zalameda, who upset 127th-ranked Julia Goerges of Germany in the opening round, won the first set against Kudryavtseva on Tuesday but couldn't hold on, dropping a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) decision to the world's 101st-ranked player.
Zalameda, the nation's seventh-ranked player in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association Singles Rankings, will be in the lineup when the Bruins travel to face No. 8 USC this Thursday.
The Pacific Life Open is annually one of the biggest stops on the WTA Tour. Zalameda would need to win two more singles matches to qualify for the main draw.
