March 12, 2008

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. - Senior first baseman Jim Murphy homered for the seventh time in eight games, but Wichita State rallied to defeat Washington State 6-4 in nonconference baseball, Wednesday night.

Murphy's blast came with two men aboard in the top of the third inning and staked the Cougars to a 3-0 lead. Travis Coulter added a RBI-single in the fourth to push the advantage to 4-0.

WSU (10-4), which lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, maintained its lead through five innings behind Ross Humes's solid outing. Humes, making his first start of the season, blanked the Shockers (8-3) on two hits while striking out three before giving way to Steve Kost in the sixth.

A double, single, error and passed ball cut the Cougars' lead to 4-1 before Andrew Davis entered with one out in the sixth and runner at the corners. Conor Gillaspie delivered a sacrifice fly and Tyler Weber plated a run with a single off Davis to trim WSU's advantage to 4-3.

The Shockers, ranked as high as 15th nationally, completed the comeback with a three-run seventh off Matt Way (0-1). Gillaspie put Wichita State on top with a two-run single and Dusty Coleman's sacrifice fly capped the rally.

'We didn't pitch well enough in the middle innings to win tonight,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'If we want to play beyond the regular season, we have to hold onto leads like we had tonight and play better in tight games.'

The Cougars have Thursday off before opening a four-game series at Oklahoma beginning Friday. The first game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Central/4:35 p.m. Pacific.
