PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -
The No. 36 California men's tennis team (6-6) fell in a 4-2 defeat to No. 71 Southern Methodist (12-6) in its first match today at the third annual Pebble Beach Collegiate Tennis Classic hosted by the University of San Francisco at the Beach and Tennis Club in Pebble Beach, Calif. No. 62 Robin Fahgen opened up scoring for the Mustangs by defeating junior Eoin Heavey on court two by a 6-1, 6-2 score to give SMU the quick 1-0 lead. Chris Hooshyar finished off freshman Bozhidar Katsarov next on court five with a 6-1, 6-3 score to extend the Mustang lead to 2-0. Senior captain Ken Nakahara got the Bears on the board with his 7-5, 6-1 win against Adolfo Solares on court six but sophomore No. 96 Kallim Stewart lost 6-2, 6-4 to No. 117 David Kuczer on the top court to put the Bears on the edge of defeat.
With the match decided, freshman Jonathan Dahan added another Cal win to the total by defeating Oivind Alver on court four in a third set tiebreaker 10-6 to get the 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(6) victory.
