March 15, 2008

LOS ANGELES - Jonathan Jones broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth with an RBI triple down the left field line Saturday as the No. 9 Long Beach State 49ers beat the USC Trojans, 9-6, at Dedeaux Field. The 49ers held off the Trojans after USC had rallied from three-run deficits twice in the game.

Shane Peterson went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI for the 49ers (11-3) while Jason Tweedy was 3-for-5. Jason Markovitz (2-0) threw 1 2/3 perfect innings as Bryan Shaw picked up his fourth save of the season.

Grant Green went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI while Anthony Vasquez hit a two-run homer, his second of the year.

Jason Corder hit a solo shot to right center in the fifth to give Long Beach State a 3-0 lead. After Robert Stock drew a walk in the bottom of the fifth, Vasquez hit his home run to right for a 3-2 49er advantage. Nick Buss reached on a fielder's choice and a stolen base plus a throwing error by Travis Howell put him at third before Green tied the game with an RBI single to left.

The 49ers bounced back in the sixth with back-to-back singles by Howell and Tweedy. Jones then attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Billy Pinkerton's throw to first pulled Mike Roskopf into Jones. The collision knocked the ball into right field, allowing two runs to score and Jones running to third. USC starter Kevin Couture then struck out Danny Espinosa and retired TJ Mittelstaedt to end the inning.

After Corder led off the seventh with a double, he scored on Peterson's RBI single for the 6-3 Long Beach State advantage.

Pinkerton led off the USC seventh by reaching on a throwing error by Espinosa. Buss then walked for runners at first and second and with an 0-2 count, Green slammed his first homer of the season, tying the game at six apiece with the three-run round-tripper.

After Jones untied the game in the eighth, Espinosa brought him home with a sacrifice fly and another run in the ninth sealed the win for the 49ers.
