Golden Bears Host Rebels At Hellman
March 17, 2008
BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team (7-6) will host UNLV (6-6) in a Tuesday (March 18) match at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Play begins at 1:30 p.m. with doubles, followed by singles after a ten minute break. Including the bout with the Rebels, the Golden Bears have two more matches on the schedule before they enter Pac-10 Conference play next weekend, hosting the Arizona Schools. Cal finished in a tie for third place last season, going 4-3 in conference play.
The Bears split matches over the weekend at the third annual Pebble Beach Collegiate Tennis Classic hosted by the University of San Francisco at the Beach and Tennis Club in Pebble Beach, Calif. Kowtowing to inclement weather conditions, Cal and Southern Methodist played singles matches first. The Mustangs took four out of the six matches to clinch the 4-2 team win. Freshman Jonathan Dahan got a win on court four and senior Ken Nakahara got a win on court six for the Bears. Cal returned to form the next day with a big 7-0 win against host USF. The Bears won eight out of nine matches, falling only on the top doubles court and swept the singles matches across the board.
The Rebels of the Mountain West Conference are visiting the Bay Area this week and face USF on Monday before taking on the Bears on Tuesday. UNLV comes into the week fresh off a 5-2 win over Ball State after falling in three consecutive matches, two by a 4-3 score to Mississippi State and South Carolina. Junior Elliot Wronski is ranked No. 93 in singles play and holds a 13-7 record. Wronski is also 10-5 in doubles play and was named a 2007 ITA Regional Player to Watch after making an appearance in the 2007 NCAA Singles Tournament.
The Bears will have the weekend off before traveling to Malibu, Calif. to face Pepperdine Wednesday (March 26) in an 11 a.m. match.
