Golden Bears Roll Lucky 7-0 Against Visiting Rebels
March 18, 2008
The No. 40 California men's tennis team (8-6) got the third sweep in its last four matches with a 7-0 win against UNLV (6-8) today at the Hellman Tennis Complex. For the second time this season, the Golden Bears won all nine matches against their opponent en route to the shutout. Freshman Jonathan Dahan notched his seventh straight victory, taking a 6-1, 6-2 win against Brian Miller on court four to clinch the match for the Bears. Dahan also contributed to clinching the doubles point for Cal with partner freshman Bozhidar Katsarov on the third doubles court as the duo defeated David Campbell and Andrew Giuffrida 9-7.
On the top doubles court, junior Geoff Chizever and freshman Pedro Zerbini teamed up to make quick work of UNLV's Luca Barlocchi and Elliot Wronski, getting the 8-1 win to put Cal ahead for the doubles point. Courts two and three were well behind, each reaching a seven-all tie. The third court finished first to clinch the point for the Bears but junior Eoin Heavey and sophomore Kallim Stewart got the 8-6 tiebreaker win on court two to help sweep the doubles courts in Cal's favor.
In singles play, court five was the first off as Katsarov put a 6-2, 6-1 victory on Campbell. Zerbini came though next with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Wesley Burrows on court three to run the Cal lead to 3-0. Dahan clinched the match for the Bears with his win on court four before senior Ken Nakahara notched a 6-0, 6-4 win against Giuffrida on court six.
In the third set on court one, No. 116 Stewart fought back after dropping his second set to earn a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 win over No. 69 Wronski. The win gave Cal its sixth point of the day but Wronski slammed his racquet down and was assessed a one-game penalty. Because his match was over, the penalty was automatically assessed on court two where Barlocchi was down 5-2 also in the third set. The penalty gave senior Pierre Mouillon the sixth game he needed to complete his victory, effectively ending play for the day. Mouillon finished with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Barlocchi on court two.
The Bears will have the upcoming weekend off before traveling to Malibu, Calif. to take on No. 15 Pepperdine Wednesday, March 26, in an 11 a.m. match. Following the match against the Waves, Cal begins Pac-10 Conference play hosting the Arizona schools on March 28 and 29. Please check CalBears.com for updates and information.
