Cal Set To Compete In Hornet Invitational
March 19, 2008
BERKELEY - The California track and field team will participate in the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational Saturday, March 22, at Hornet Stadium, the same venue where senior All-American Alysia Johnson won the NCAA Outdoor 800-meter title last year. The meet begins at 9 a.m. with the hammer throw.
Interim Track and Field Director Tony Sandoval will bring some experienced athletes to the Hornet Invitational. Among the athletes competing for the Golden Bears are seniors Steven Conrad (100 meters, 200 meters) and Craig Kent (shot put). Both Conrad and Kent achieved NCAA provisional-qualifying marks during the indoor campaign. Some of the women's competitors are sophomore Kristen Meister (high jump), redshirt freshman Tracey Stewart (long jump), junior Mackenzie Pierce (1500 meters) and junior Artensia Young (triple jump).
At last weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships, Johnson took third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.47. Although she didn't claim her third NCAA 800-meter title, Johnson did earn All-America honors for the sixth time of her collegiate career. Also competing at the national championships was fellow senior All-American Ed Wright. Wright placed seventh in the high jump (7-0.25, 2.14m) and became a three-time All-American in the process.
During the indoor season, the Bears earned 15 individual provisional qualifiers. Johnson was an automatic qualifier in the 800. The women's 4x400 relay and the men's distance medley relay also provisionally qualified.
Cal returns to Sacramento the following weekend for the Sacramento State Nike Elite Invitational Saturday, March 29, at Hornet Stadium. The first home meet for the Bears will be the Cal Multi Event, April 2-3, at Edwards Stadium.
