Brown Gets Win As UW Beats Wolverines, 12-3

March 21, 2008

SEATTLE - Freshman Geoff Brown, making his first start after seven relief outings, faced only one batter over the minimum in his five innings of work to pick up the win as the Washington baseball team beat Utah Valley, 12-3, Friday at Husky Ballpark.

The Huskies (11-6) scored in each of the first six innings of the win, their sixth in a row. Utah Valley dropped to 4-15-1 on the season.

Brown, a lefty from Jackson High, went to 1-0 with the win. He needed only 56 pitches to complete five innings, allowing a single and no walks while striking out three.

The UW grabbed the early lead in unusual fashion, scoring two in the first. Leadoff hitter David Bentrott struck out, but reached first as the third strike got past the catcher. Jake Rife followed with a double to left, scoring Bentrott from first, but a throw to second base to try and get Rife was errant and allowed him to come all the way around, giving the Huskies an early 2-0 lead.

In the second, Rife got another RBI on a bases-loaded walk before two more Huskies scored on a pair of Utah Valley errors. The outburst continued in the third as a Michael Burgher sacrifice fly and a two-run double from Bentrott tacked on three more runs, making it 8-0.

In the fourth, Husky right fielder Kyle Conley belted a long solo homer to left-center, his second of the year. In the fifth, a long sacrifice fly from Bentrott, which was caught just shy of leaving the park for a grand slam, drove in a 10th.

Utah Valley scored its first runs in the sixth as one scored on a passed ball and another came in on an RBI single from Ryan Jones. But, Husky third baseman Brian Pearl's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth got those two runs back.

Josh Hinckley's pinch-hit homer in the seventh accounted for the other UVU run. Wolverines starter Craig Stringham (0-1) went two and one-third innings for the loss.

Saturday, the Huskies play against Utah Valley at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Portland at 2:30 p.m. Fans can catch live video and live stats, at no cost, at
