No. 12 Cal Baseball Wins at Washington State, 7-4
March 21, 2008
PULLMAN, WASH. - The No. 12-ranked California baseball team picked up its second Pac-10 win of the season, defeating host Washington State, 7-4, Friday night in Pullman. The Golden Bears, getting strong relief pitching from sophomore right-hander Daniel Wolford and seeing senior second baseman Josh Satin tie a school record with a 23-game hitting streak, improved to 15-3-1 (2-0 in conference) on the year. Junior first baseman David Cooper and sophomore right fielder Blake Smith also homered for Cal. The Cougars dropped to 13-7 (0-2).
Wolford, a transfer from Long Beach State, improved his record to 2-0 after relieving starter Craig Bennigson (5.1 innings, nine hits, four runs, two walks, three strikeouts) in the sixth inning. Wolford continued his stellar season as he threw 2.2 innings with three hits, no runs, one walk and five strikeouts. Wolford has yet to give up a run in 2008, throwing 19.0 scoreless innings with 21 strikeouts and only six walks. The losing pitcher for the Cougars was reliever Andrew Davis (2-1, 0.1 inning, one hit, two runs, two walks). Junior closer Matt Gorgen earned the save for Cal, throwing the bottom of the ninth with no hits and a strikeout. It was Gorgen's third save of the season and his 14th career save, tying him with Joe Buckley (1986-89) for sixth on the Bears' all-time save list.
Offensively, Satin tied Brian Horwitz's school-record 23-game hitting streak (set during the 2001 season) when he got an infield single in the fifth inning. Satin has hit safely in all 18 games he has played in this season, plus ending the 2007 season on a five-game hitting streak.
Cal finished the game with 10 hits, including two hits apiece from junior left fielder Charlie Cutler and sophomore third baseman Jeff Kobernus, and two RBI apiece from Cooper and Smith. Kobernus doubled to lead-off the second inning and later scored, and Cutler had an RBI single in the eighth. Cooper hit his team-high ninth home run in the fifth inning, while Smith hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Sophomore designated hitter Rich Gorman hit an RBI double in the Bears' four-run eighth inning as well.
The Bears will next play Washington State in the series final at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 22 at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman, Wash.
Cal: Cooper, solo home run in the fifth inning. Smith, two-run homer in the eighth inning.
