Cal Garners Fifth Place Finish at the 2008 NCAAs; Boyle Breaks Her Own School Record in the 1650

Columbus, OH - The California Golden Bear women's swimming team capped off its 2007-08 season with a fifth place finish at the 2008 NCAA Women's Swimming an Diving Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, hosted by Ohio State. Cal finished the three-day competition with a total of 291 points in the 21 NCAA sanctioned events.
Under the direction of head coach Teri McKeever, Cal has now finished fifth or better three straight years. Additionally, the Bears have placed in the top 10 for the last 12 years.
Arizona won the championship with a total of 484 points, followed by Auburn (348), Stanford (343) and Texas A&M (315).
Lauren Boyle broke her own school record in the 1650-yard freestyle with a fifth-place finish of 16:01.80 - also a new lifetime best, and three seconds better than her previous school record of 16:03.51. Last season at the NCAAs in Minnesota, Boyle placed 19th in the 1650 free with a time of 16:24.11. At the Pac-10 Championships earlier in the month, Boyle smashed the longstanding 1650 record, previously held by Sarah Anderson in 1988.
Lauren Rogers placed 11th overall in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.42 in the `B' Final. Her 1:55.12 in the morning preliminaries was a lifetime best and the third-fastest time in school history. Her finals time of 1:55.42 is now the fourth-fastest in school history. She now owns five of the top 10 200 back times in program history.
Emily Silver capped off her amazing career at Cal with a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.21. Silver, who qualified in the morning preliminaries with a 48.50, has her name prominently displayed seven times in Cal's top 10 times in the 100 free.
Cal gained 14 more points after Dana Vollmer claimed a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.48 - tenth-fastest mark in school history. Vollmer owns seven of the 10 fastest 200 fly times in school history. Rachel Ridgeway qualified for the B Final in the 200 fly with a 1:56.56, finished eleventh overall with a time of 1:56.39.
The quartet of Tara Thomas, Hannah Wilson, Silver and Vollmer swam a second place time of 3:13.03 in the 400-yard freestyle relay to gain 34 points in the final event of the evening. The quartet posted a morning preliminary time of 3:14.55.
