LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Washington State's Anna Layman, Lorraine King, McKenzie Garberg and the men's 4x100m relay team were all winners Saturday at the USC Trojan Invitational at Loker Stadium/Cromwell Field on the University of Southern California campus.

The Cougar women reached seven NCAA Regional Qualifying marks at this meet while the WSU men reached five RQs.

'We had a lot of good things happen at this meet and I was happy with the outcomes,' WSU Head Coach Rick Sloan said. 'It was very hot for us and it sort of overwhelmed us with the temperature at 85 degrees. After we left town in a snow storm Thursday it was a little much.'

Anna Layman (redshirt freshman, Spokane Valley, Wash.) won the women's 800m race with a personal-record time of 2 minutes, 10.74 seconds, with Lisa Egami finishing the race in 2:11.74, and Karen DeMartini reaching a PR time of 2:15.24.

Lorraine King (junior, Fontana, Calif.) won the women's 400m hurdles race with an NCAA RQ time of 1:00.29, just .01 seconds off her PR time from last year, and freshmen Veronica Elseroad-Wall (1:01.57) and Caroline Hedel (1:03.28) had impressive collegiate debuts. 'Their racing today is encouraging for the future,' Sloan said.

McKenzie Garberg (senior, Benton City, Wash.), who threw an NCAA RQ hammer mark Friday, came back with an NCAA RQ mark in the discus to win the event with a throw of 171-feet, 5 inches (52.24m), and also reached regional qualifying in the shot put with a heave of 47-9 (14.55m). Teammate Jessica Zita just edged out Garberg in the standings as she reached an NCAA RQ in the shot put with a toss of 47-9 1/4 (14.56m).

The Washington State men's 4x100m relay team of André Jennings, Jeshua Anderson, Justin Woods and Marlon Murray was victorious with an NCAA RQ time of 40.61 seconds. 'I'm pretty happy with the men's relay,' Sloan said of the three freshmen and one junior squad. 'Hand-offs were okay except the last one when Marlon did not get out fast enough and Justin ran up on him but it was a good early season race.'

In addition to his relay race, Anderson ran an NCAA RQ time in the men's 400m hurdles of 51.80 for second place while Barry Leavitt ran a time of 52.62.

Both women javelin throwers reached NCAA RQ marks in their initial meet of the 2008 season. Marissa Tschida (Missoula, Mont.) broke the WSU freshman javelin record with her throw of 158-2 (48.20m) and Jasmine McCormack tossed a PR of 143-0 (43.58m).

A pair of men's javelin throwers also reached NCAA RQ marks as Jon Jeffreys threw 219-10 (67.00m) and Nathan Bache tossed a PR of 204-1 (62.21m). 'Jon had a really good series,' Sloan said. 'He probably had four throws in the 218 to 220 range. And Nate threw well today too.'

In other events, Sara Trané, who missed the indoor season with an injury, showed she was ready for the outdoor season as she ran a PR time of 9:47.38 in the 3000m, the 10th-fastest time in school history.

A total of ten Cougar men and women reached PRs in the 1500m races Saturday. All seven of the WSU men ran under four minutes: Chris Concha 3:53.38, Chris Williams 3:53.70, Dominic Smargiassi 3:54.73, Sam Ahlbeck 3:57.04, Alex Grant 3:58.29, Evan Blanshan 3:58.52, and Dan Geib 3:59.91. In the women's race, Isley Gonzalez ran a time of 4:35.91, followed by Meghan Leonard in 4:36.43, Collier Lawrence in 4:38.66, and Amanda Andrews in 4:43.80.

In the women's triple jump, Sarah Burns opened the outdoor season strong with a leap of 40-1 1/4 (12.22m) and Candace Missouri jumped a PR of 40-0w (12.19m).

All four WSU men's discus throwers in the event reached PRs with Rickey Moody tossing a distance of 151-10 (46.29m), followed by Chase Mancuso's 151-8 (46.24m), Kyle Schauble's 104-7 (31.89m), and Trevor Habberstad's 102-3 (31.17m). Schauble also threw a javelin PR distance of 157-5 (47.99m).

Washington State will next compete at the Sacramento State Nike Invitational, March 29.
