Bruins Are the 18-Hole Leaders in Georgia

The third-ranked UCLA men's golf team, riding the hot putter of senior Kevin Chappell, took the first round lead in the U.S. Collegiate Championship at The Golf Club of Georgia.
The Bruins posted a team score of 290 (+2) and led second-place Florida State by one stroke. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma State was third at 292 (+4), followed by USC, Alabama and East Tennessee State at 294 (+6).
Senior Kevin Chappell, ranked fourth by GolfWeek entering the event, took the first round lead with a three-under par 69. Chappell came to the par 3 third hole at one under par after making birdie on the first hole. He produced quadruple bogey seven at the third to go to three-over par. At the sixth, he made the first of five straight birides to move to two-under par. He birdied the 16th and made par on his final two holes for a 69.
He was tied for first with four other players.
