Men's Golf Climbs the Leaderboard in Second Round of Duck Invitational

CRESWELL, ORE. - The Washington State University men's golf team bounced back in the second round of the Duck Invitational to finish the first day of competition in a tie for sixth, Monday.

The Cougars climbed up the leaderboard after firing a tournament tying low score of 285 in the second round of play at the par-72, 7,093 Emerald Valley Golf Club. The University of Oregon is hosting the tournament.

Led by senior Jordan Mason, the Cougars carded a total score of 594 and are only four stokes from cracking the top three. Mason fired a 1-over par 145 and sits in a tie for fifth heading into the final round.

Freshman Nick Ellis recorded the second lowest 18-hole score of the tournament as he shot a 3-under 69 in the second round to finish the day tied for ninth. Ellis' two-round total is 147. Sophomore Kevin Tucker also improved throughout the day and finished close behind his teammate after inking a 149, good for a tie at 23rd.

'The men had a really slow start but lit it up in the afternoon,' Head Coach Walt Williams said. 'Mason played fantastic and Ellis and Tucker were solid as always.'

Sophomore Nick Grigsby heads into day two with a total score of 157 and freshman Xavier Dailly ended with 159 to round out the Cougar contingent.

After the first round of competition, the Cougars sat in 10th place with a total score of 309. Mason led the Cougar squad heading into the second round of play as he sat in a tie for sixth while carding a 1-over 73. Tucker and Ellis both shot a 78 in the first round of play and improved on their score during the second round of competition. Grigsby carded an 80 and Dailly ended round one with 86.

The Cougars look to continue their run up the leaderboard as final round action begins at 8 a.m., Tuesday.
