PULLMAN, Wash. - Redshirt-freshman Chad Arnold pitched six innings to earn the victory as No. 28 Washington State downed Gonzaga 6-2 in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Tuesday.

Arnold (2-2) gave up two runs on six hits, struck out three and walked one. Washington State improved to 15-7 while Gonzaga dropped to 15-10.

'I am proud of Chad because he pitched through some adversity that he didn't create,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut, who earned his 100th-career victory, said. 'He gave us a solid outing and kept our bullpen rested for the most part.'

Senior Paul Gran was the hitting star for the Cougars as he collected two of WSU's eight hits and drove in two runs to raise his team-leading RBI total to 29.

'Paul Gran is a big-time player in a big-time league,' Marbut said. 'He is one of the best in the country.'

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off of Bulldogs' starter and loser Reedy Berg (1-2). Shea Vucinich doubled with one out and scored on Gran's single as the latter took second on the throw home. A single by Jim Murphy moved Gran to third and Jared Prince followed with a sacrifice fly.

Gonzaga tied the game 2-2 in the fourth on a RBI-double by Mark Castellitto and a run-scoring single by Anthony Synegal.

The Cougars took control with three runs in their half of the fourth on a RBI-single by Matt Argyropoulos, a run-scoring double by Matt Fanelli, and a Travis Coulter sacrifice fly for a 5-2 lead.

In the seventh, Coulter drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Gran to increase the WSU lead to 6-2.

Gonzaga threatened in the eighth against Cougar reliever Steve Kost putting runners at first and second with one out. Michael Ratigan came out of the WSU bullpen to strike out Bryan Winston and retire Synegal on a pop up. Ratigan worked a perfect ninth for his first save of the season and second of his career.

WSU embarks on a four-game road trip beginning with a three-game Pac-10 series at Stanford. The first meeting between the Cougars and Cardinal is scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday.
