Rosey Neill Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
March 25, 2008
Stanford, Calif. - Cardinal sophomore Rosey Neill has been named the Pacific-10 Player of the Week, as announced by Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen earlier today. The Laguna Hills, Calif. native recorded four homeruns and five extra-base hits to lead Stanford to four more wins last week.
Neill didn't have any trouble coming off of the team's 12-day break, hitting .545 as the Cardinal swept the competition at the Stanford Invitational II and reached 30 wins at the earliest date in school history. The Cardinal catcher burst back onto the scene with four homeruns in four games, nine RBI and whopping 1.727 slugging percentage. Defensively, she also caught the seventh perfect game in school history for freshman Ashley Chinn. On Friday, Neill won the game almost single-handedly, using a three-run homerun and an RBI double to drive in four of Stanford's five runs. On Saturday, Neill belted another homer to put the game into run-rule territory, and on Sunday, she thumped two more balls over the fence against East Carolina. Neill finished the weekend with six hits in 11 tries, five of which were extra-base hits. She is now tied for second with Olympic gold medalist Jessica Mendoza on the Stanford single-season homerun chart (14).
The honor is the second for Neill this season (she also won on Mar. 4), as well as the second of her career. It is the third Pac-10 Player/Pitcher of the Week honor for the Cardinal this season, as junior pitcher Missy Penna also won the award on Feb. 12.
The Cardinal meets Boston College today in a midweek contest, before hosting Campbell, North Dakota State, College of Charleston and Texas Tech in the Stanford Classic over the weekend.
