Stanford's Neill, Arizona State's Burkhart Named Pac-10 Softball Player, Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD sophomore catcher Rosey Neill has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for March 18-24, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Neill, a Laguna Hills, Calif. native, didn't have any trouble coming off of the finals week break, hitting .545 as the Cardinal swept the competition at the Stanford Invitational II and reached 30 wins at the earliest date in school history. The Cardinal catcher burst back onto the scene with four homeruns in four games, nine RBI and whopping 1.727 slugging percentage.

On Friday, Neill won the game almost single-handedly, using a three-run homerun and an RBI double to drive in four of Stanford's five runs. On Saturday, Neill belted another homer to put the game into run-rule territory and on Sunday she thumped two more over the fence against East Carolina.

Neill finished the weekend with six hits in 11 tries, five of which were extra-base hits. She is now tied for second with Jessica Mendoza on the Stanford single-season home run chart (14).

Stanford (31-2) plays a double header against UC Davis on Wed., March 26 before entering Pac-10 Conference play hosting the Arizona schools. The Cardinal will first take on No. 10/10 Arizona on Fri., March 26 before welcoming No. 1/2 Arizona State on Sat., March 26 and Sun., March 27.

This is the second Player of the Week honor for Neill this year as well as the second of her career. The accolade is the 35th for the Stanford softball team.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE senior Katie Burkhart has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for March 18-24, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Burkhart, a San Luis Obispo, Calif. native threw her third no-hitter of the season over the weekend and struck out 44 batters in 25.1 innings pitched, leading the Sun Devils to a 4-1 weeekend, including a win over No. 15 Louisiana-Lafayette.

Burkhart opened the weekend striking out 16 Utah batters as she rolled to the sixth no-hitter of her career and narrowly missed her third perfect game, hitting three batters. Against Florida State on Saturday, Burkhart took only her second loss of the year but still struck out 10 Seminoles and allowed only two earned runs.

Burkhart rebounded on Sunday as the Sun Devils bested the No. 15 Ragin' Cajuns, 3-1, behind the senior's eight strikeout complete-game performance. Later that day, Burkhart came in for relief and proceeded to strikeout seven of the eight batters she faced to capture her first save of the year.

Arizona State (34-2) is battling UCLA for the top spot in both the Softball and USA Today/NFCA Top 25 polls as the teams head into Conference play this week.

The Sun Devils open Pac-10 play on the road as they travel to California on Fri., March 28 and Stanford on Sat., March 29 and Sun., March 30.

This is Burkhart's eighth career Pitcher of the Week honor, second this year, and the 54th all-time for Arizona State.
