State Farm Coaches All-America Team Finalists

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford women's basketball standouts Jayne Appel and Candice Wiggins were among 40 players named as finalists for the State Farm Coaches All-America Team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Monday. The selection gives Wiggins the chance for her fourth consecutive All-America nod, and puts Appel in position for her first.

Wiggins, Stanford's and the Pac-10's all-time leading scorer with 2,491 career points through March 23, leads the conference with 19.1 points a game this season and led the Cardinal to its eighth consecutive Pac-10 regular-season title as well as its fifth Pac-10 Tournament crown in the last seven years.

Her stellar play has garnered her a slew of honors, as Wiggins was named Pac-10 Player of the Year for a record-breaking third time in her career, the Pac-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and was named to the All-America teams of ESPN.com, Sports Illustrated, and CBSSportsline.com. Wiggins is also a finalist for the Naismith Trophy and the John Wooden Award.

Appel, a sophomore center, has built nicely off her Pac-10 Freshman of the Year campaign of a year ago, leading the Pac-10 with a 59.4% shooting percentage and 2.35 blocked shots per game while being second with 8.9 rebounds a game and fifth with 14.8 points per contest.

Her play this season, which includes 10 double-doubles and a pair of 30-point performances, most recently with her career-high 33 points in Saturday's NCAA Tournament first-round victory over Cleveland State, led to Appel being named to the All-Pac-10 First Team in early March.

The 40 finalists, who were chosen from the 52 regional finalists by the State Farm Coaches' All-America Team committee, are now in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches' All-America Team.

The State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team for NCAA Division I will be announced at the State Farm Coaches' All-America Team Press Conference at the Tampa Hyatt Regency on April 5, at 9:45 a.m. (ET) in Tampa, Fla.
