NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Set to Begin Thursday

March 26, 2008

Federal Way, Wash. - The top swimmers and divers from around the country will begin competition at the 2008 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships tomorrow at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. The University of Washington is co-hosting the event, along with the Seattle Sports Commission.

The meet will begin on Thursday, March 27 with the day one swimming preliminaries at noon, followed by the day's diving preliminaries. Finals will begin at 7 p.m., for the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving, and 400 medley relay.

Auburn University will be looking for its sixth-consecutive team title and eight overall. Head coach Richard Quick, a six-time United States Olympic coach who directed 12 teams to NCAA titles, returned to the Auburn staff at the beginning of the season. Quick has guided teams to 12 NCAA titles - seven at Stanford (as the head women's swimming and diving program for 17 seasons) and five at Texas (as the women's head coach from 1984-88).

Texas will also be in the mix for the team title, as 30th-year head coach Eddie Reese, looks for his 10th NCAA team championship. The Longhorns have captured all 10 of their NCAA titles under Reese, who will serve his third term as the head coach of the U.S. Olympic men's swimming team later this summer at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Texas will bring 16 swimmers and three divers to Federal Way in its quest to capture the national championship. Junior Michael Klueh enters the meet as the top seed in the 500 freestyle, and sophomore Dave Walters holds the nation's top seed in the 200 freestyle.
