No. 11 Cal Men's Swimming in Third Place After First Day of NCAA Championships

FEDERAL WAY, WASH. - Bolstered by a national runner-up finish in the 400 medley relay and a third-place finish in the 200 free relay, the No. 11-ranked University of California men's swimming team sits in third place after day one of the 2008 NCAA Championships, held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash. The Golden Bears, under the direction of first-year coach David Durden, trail only No. 2-ranked Arizona (137) and Texas (116) with 112 points, and are ahead of last year NCAA champs Auburn (97) and Bay Area rival Stanford (93).
Highlights for Cal include its 400 medley relay team of junior David Russell, freshman Damir Dugonjic, senior Jernej Godec and senior William Copeland placing second with a school-record time of 3:05.38. The Bears' 2008 squad topped the former school record of 3:07.31 set in 2004. Cal's 200 free relay of Copeland, Godec, senior Joe Whittington and freshman Graeme Moore placed third with a time of 1:16.94, third-best mark in school history.
Cal's top individual finish was Copeland placing fifth in the 50 free with a mark of 19.41, while Godec was sixth with a time of 19.46 and Whittington was 12th with a time of 19.66.
Other first day results for the Bears was senior Dominik Meichtry finishing 12th in the 500 free (4:18.61). In the 200 IM, Cal had three athletes earned honorable mention All-America honors. Freshman Martti Aljand was 13th (1:45.80), senior Louis Vayo was 15th (1:45.86) and sophomore Sean Mahoney was 16th (1:46.60).
In the one-meter diving competition, junior Sam Helvie was 15th with a score of 322.65.
On Friday the NCAA meet will continue with the prelim and the finals of the 200 yard medley relay, the 400 yard individual medley, 100 yard butterfly, 200 yard freestyle, 100 yard breaststroke, 100 yard backstroke and three-meter diving competition. The Bears' 200 medley relay of Russell, Dugonjic, Godec and Whittington is seed second in the nation, while Russell is seeded third in the 100 back.
