Cal Men's Swimming Successful in Day Two of NCAA Championships

FEDERAL WAY, WASH. - The No. 11-ranked Cal men's swimming team had another successful day at the 2008 NCAA Championships, held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash. The Golden Bears were paced by freshman Damir Dugonjic placing second in the nation in the 100 breast with a time of 52.61, and junior David Russell finishing third in the 100 back with a school-record time of 45.42. Additionally, Cal finished third in the 200 medley relay with a school-record time of 1:24.50 (Russell, Dugonjic, senior Jernej Godec, senior William Copeland). The Bears sit in fourth place with 222.50 points, trailing only Arizona (376), Texas (285) and Stanford (231).

Russell broke the former 100 back school record of 46.05 set by Alex Lim in 2002. The former 200 medley relay record was 1:25.16 set in 2004 (Lim, Caleb Rowe, Milorad Cavic, Duje Draganja).

Other second day results for Cal included freshman Martti Aljand placing eighth (53.37) and sophomore Sean Mahoney finishing 14th (53.60) in the 100 breast to go along with Dugonjic's national runner-up. In the 200 free, senior Dominik Meichtry was ninth with a time of 1:33.56, while fellow senior Louis Vayo was 12th in the 400 IM with a mark of 3:47.82.

In another relay competition, Cal's 800 free relay team of Vayo, Meichtry, Copeland and Aljand were 11th with a mark of 6:26.06. In diving, junior Sam Helvie was 13th in the three-meter board with a score of 347.00 to go along with his 15th place finish in the one-meter competition (322.65) on Thursday.

On Thursday, the 400 medley relay team of Russell, Dugonjic, Godec and Copeland placed second nationally with a school-record time of 3:05.38. The Bears' 2008 squad topped the former school record of 3:07.31 set in 2004. Cal's 200 free relay of Copeland, Godec, senior Joe Whittington and freshman Graeme Moore placed third with a time of 1:16.94, third-best mark in school history.

Cal's top individual finish Thursday was Copeland placing fifth in the 50 free with a mark of 19.41, while Godec was sixth with a time of 19.46 and Whittington was 12th with a time of 19.66.

Other first day results for the Bears was Meichtry finishing 12th in the 500 free (4:18.61). In the 200 IM, Cal had three athletes earned honorable mention All-America honors. Aljand was 13th (1:45.80), Vayo was 15th (1:45.86) and Mahoney was 16th (1:46.60).

On Saturday the NCAA meet will continue with the prelim and the finals of the 1,650 free, the 200 back, the 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, platform diving and the 400 free relay. Copeland is the nation's second seed in the 100 free, Russell is the nation's fourth seed in the 200 back and Cal's 400 free relay is seeded fifth.
