The No. 42 California men's tennis team (9-7, 1-0 Pac-10) defeated visiting No. 55 Arizona, 5-2, today at the Hellman Tennis Complex to open Pac-10 Conference play. The Golden Bears clinched the match when senior Pierre Mouillon defeated Andres Carrasco 6-3, 7-6 on court two. Both players had been off the court for over an hour due to a rain delay and resumed the match at two-points all in the second set tiebreaker. Mouillon fended off the Wildcat attack to get a 7-5 tiebreaker win, giving Cal the nod and leaving Arizona with a 10-6 record, 0-1 to start Pac-10 play. The win is the 199th career victory for Cal head coach Peter Wright.

The Bears opened play with a flurry, winning with ease on all three doubles courts. The top Cal duo of junior Geoff Chizever and freshman Pedro Zerbini was the first off the court, getting an 8-4 win over Arizona's Bruno Alcala and Ravid Hazi. Cal court No. 3 three got an 8-4 win as well to sew up the doubles point for the Bears as freshmen Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsarov turned a two-break advantage into a win. Court two finished only seconds after court three with Cal taking the 8-6 win.

Heading into singles carrying the first point, the Bears wasted no time jumping out to a bigger lead as Zerbini claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win on court five over Peter Zimmer. On the top court, sophomore No. 116 Kallim Stewart took out No. 121 Claudio Christen in straight sets, getting the 7-5, 6-4 win to put Cal up 3-0. With the Bears up a set on both court Nos. two and three, the rain began to come down as both second sets went to tiebreakers.

When play resumed, Mouillon clinched the match for the Bears. The next two matches off the courts were No. 4 and No. 3, both Arizona wins. Dahan lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Pat Metham on court four, snapping his eight-match singles winning streak. Katsarov completed play for the day by defeating Hazi 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. The singles win is Katsarov's team-high 25th of the year.

The Bears will host No. 15 Arizona State (12-1, 0-1 Pac-10) in a 1 p.m. start tomorrow at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Sun Devils were upset by No. 34 Stanford earlier today in a 7-0 sweep. Please check for updates and information.
