No. 1 Arizona State Rolls To 16-5 Win Over USC
March 29, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - Petey Paramore went 4-for-5 Friday as the No. 1 Arizona State Sun Devils banged out 16 hits for the 16-5 victory over the USC Trojans in the first game of a Pac-10 Conference series at Packard Stadium. ASU (23-1, 1-0) led 8-0 after four innings and salted the game with an eight-run fifth inning.
Tommy Milone (3-2) took the loss for USC (11-12, 2-2) after allowing eight runs in four innings. Grant Green extended his season-high hitting streak to 12 games with a 3-for-5 night, adding two doubles and two RBI for the Trojans.
Paramore's third single of the game scored Ike Davis for a 6-0 lead in the fourth. Milone tried to pick off Brett Wallace at second, but his throw bounced off Wallace's leg into center field. Wallace would scored and Paramore scored from first after center fielder Nick Buss overthrew catcher Robert Stock, landing in the ASU dugout for the eight-run advantage.
USC knocked out ASU starter Josh Satow with three runs in the fifth after Satow allowed just two hits through four scoreless innings. Tommy Rafferty (4-0) entered the game with the bases loaded and induced a ground out from Stock to end the inning.
The Sun Devils took advantage of five walks in the fifth (one intentional). Kiel Roling hit a three-run double to center and Ryan Sontag later added a two-run triple as 12 batters came to the plate.
Freshman Chris Mezger in his second appearance for the Trojans threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.
The series continues tomorrow at 6 p.m. with the finale on Sunday (March 30) at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
