No. 34 Stanford Downs No. 55 Arizona, 5-2

March 29, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 34 Stanford men's tennis team took care of business this afternoon, dispatching No. 55 Arizona, 5-2, at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The match marks Stanford's third victory this week, having defeated No. 75 Brown and No. 15 Arizona State earlier in the week. The win also improves Stanford to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10.

Stanford was again successful in doubles competition, capturing two of the three matches to grab the doubles point and get off to the early lead. Freshman Greg Hirshman and sophomore Richard Wire combined for their 17th victory of the season, quickly defeating Andres Carrasco and Peter Zimmer, 8-2. Juniors Matt Bruch and Blake Muller picked up the win that locked up the doubles point, beating Bruno Alcala and Ravid Hazi, 9-8.

'The doubles results were almost like a carbon copy of what happened in Tucson, except we got the tiebreaker on this one,' said head coach John Whitlinger. 'Our guys did a great job.'

In singles action, Arizona would never recover from Stanford's early lead, as the Cardinal went on to win three straight matches to secure the overall victory. #91 Wire, Hirshman, and Kao all defeated their opponents in straight sets in the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 positions.

'I was really impressed with our bottom lineup today,' praised Whitlinger. 'They got the job done today and they got it done quickly.'

#56 Bruch would add one more tally to the total score, putting the Cardinal up 5-0 over the Wildcats, but Arizona spoiled Stanford's bid for a second straight shutout, snatching away two points in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

'It was really a team effort, both yesterday and today,' commented Whitlinger. 'Our No. 1 guy doesn't lose too often, but when he did our guys were there to pick him up. I give Arizona's Claudio Christen a lot of credit, he played well.'

'I'm thrilled to death to start the Pac-10 season with two wins, we have UCLA and USC next week and our guys are looking forward to it. Both of those teams have the potential to be NCAA Champions.'

Stanford will travel to Los Angeles this week to face USC and UCLA on Friday and Saturday. The Cardinal lost matches to both the Trojans and the Bruins earlier this year and will be looking to redeem themselves in their quest for the Pac-10 regular season crown.
