No. 7 California Wins Seventh Straight With 5-2 Victory At No. 15 ASU

The No. 7 California women's tennis team (13-3, 4-0 Pac-10) won its seventh straight match today, defeating No. 15 Arizona State (12-4, 2-1 Pac-10) by a 5-2 score at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. The Golden Bears are winners of 11 of their last 12 matches, and now hold a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play. Freshman No. 16 Marina Cossou clinched the match for Cal when she defeated No. 35 Nadia Abdala by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 count on the top court.

The Bears opened up with a struggle on their hands as the Devils took the doubles point with victories on the second and third courts. No. 45-ranked senior duo of Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano was able to defeat the No. 43-ranked team of sisters Nadia and Laila Abdala on court No. 1 by an 8-7 score with an 8-5 tiebreaker.

In singles play, the No. 15-ranked Babos completed her match first, falling to No. 40 Kelcy McKenna 6-3, 7-6. Babos was only able to score four points in the second set tiebreaker, giving ASU the 2-0 lead in the match. Junior No. 89 Bojana Bobusic finished next, defeating Wendy Pilecka 6-2, 6-4 on court six. Next, Kusano tied the match up at two points each when she got a 6-1, 7-6 win against Ashlee Brown on court five. Kusano won the second set tiebreaker by a 9-7 score.

Junior No. 64 Claire Ilcinkas gave Cal the lead when she beat Micaela Hein on court four. Ilcinkas dropped the first set 6-2 but came back to win the second and third, 6-1 and 6-1. The No. 16-ranked Cossou finished off No. 35 Abdala next on the top court to seal the deal for the Bears, who went up 4-2. As the last match to finish, senior No. 37 Cristina Visico grinded out a three-set win after coming back from losing the first set 6-3. Visico put together two 7-5 wins in the second and third sets to get her 21st singles victory of the year.

The Bears will return to Berkeley to host UCLA and USC next weekend. Cal takes on the Bruins Friday (April 4) in a 1:30 p.m. start before facing USC Saturday (April 5) in a noon match. Please check for more information and updates.
