No. 9 Cal Varsity 8 Wins Twice on Day 1 of Pac-10 Challenge

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - California won its varsity eight races against Virginia and Ohio State at the Pac-10 Challenge hosted by Stanford on Saturday, the first day of the regatta. The Golden Bears' ninth-ranked varsity eight boat edged No. 2 Virginia in the morning and outraced No. 5 Ohio State by more than 13 seconds in the afternoon.

Cal recorded a time of 6:51.36 to Virginia's 6:54.86 in the Bears' first varsity eight race. They came back in the afternoon to defeat Ohio State, 7:16.34-7:29.72.

Also on Saturday morning, the Cavaliers beat the Bears' second varsity eight, 7:04.81-7:07.73. Cal rebounded to defeat UVa in the varsity four race, 8:02.26-8:08.41.

In the afternoon, Cal concluded its match-up with the Cavs, beating them, 7:37.32-7:48.61, in the novice eight event.

Cal fell to Ohio State in the second varsity eight, 7:25.24-7:31.93, and in the varsity four, 8:58.57-9:00.20.

The Cal varsity eight is slated to take on Notre Dame at 9:24 a.m. on Sunday, the final day of the Pac-10 Challenge. The Bears' second varsity eight will take on the Irish at 10:52 a.m. and the two schools will meet in the varsity four at 11:16. a.m. The complete schedule of events can be found on the Stanford Web site at
