Stanford Achieves Several Regional Marks At Cal Poly Invitational

    The Stanford men's and women's track and field teams achieved several regional qualifying standards at the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday. A windy day did not make for ideal conditions, but the Cardinal held strong to still achieve several top marks.

    Both the men and the women were led by their throwers who had multiple regional qualifiers in several different events.

    Michaela Wallerstedt took first place in the discus, while achieving a regional qualifying standard mark of 49-0 ¾. Also with a regional mark in the same event was Melissa Yunghans with a toss of 48-8 ½.

    In the javelin, Danielle Maier improved her regional mark to 157-7 ¼ in taking the event win.

    The final regional mark for the women came in the hammer throw where Jaynie Goodbody finished second with a toss of 179-7.

    Whitney Liehr also had an impressive day with event wins in the long jump (19-6 ½) and the 100 meter hurdles (14.14 seconds).

    The other event winners for the Cardinal were Erica McLain in the 100 meters with a time of 12.08 seconds and the Stanford 4x100 relay, which finished with a time of 47.51 seconds.

    The men were led by Mike Macellari who had event wins and regional qualifying standards in both the shot put and the discus. Macellari had a toss of 55-7 ½ in the shot put; while his throw of 170-1 ½ in the discus achieved the regional standard for the first time this season.

    In the hammer throw Kyle Davis-Hammerquist achieved a regional qualifying mark with a toss of 18-10 to win the event.

    Also achieving top marks in the field were the Stanford pole vaulters. Graeme Hoste won the event with a vault of 16-6 ¾ to achieve a regional mark. Casey Roche finished second due to misses, but achieved the same mark to a regional mark.

    The final regional qualifier for Stanford was Myles Bradley who won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.05 seconds.

    The Stanford men had several other event winners including Wopamo Osaisai in the 100 meters (10.61 seconds), Zach Chandy in the 400 meters (49.10 seconds), Russell Brown in the 800 meters (1:51.01), and the Stanford 4x100 meter relay (41.63 seconds).

    Stanford will return to action next Friday and Saturday, April 4-5 when the host the Stanford Invitational. The Stanford Invite is one of the top meets on the west coast and includes athletes from around the country for two full days of action.
